The Salvation Army and HOPE worldwide Partner to Support Families in Need in Ukraine

Feb 24, 2023

Approaching the One-Year Anniversary of the Ukraine-Russia Conflict, the Organizations are Providing Refugee Families in Ukraine with Food, Essential Supplies and Psychosocial Support

Together, The Salvation Army and HOPE worldwide are providing displaced Ukrainian children and families in regions throughout Ukraine with hot meals, food baskets, vouchers and activities for psychosocial support during this time of unrest.

According to reports, more than 13.4 million individuals are internally and externally displaced and need life-saving humanitarian assistance. The violence in Ukraine continues to contribute to a rise in trauma among Ukrainian children and adults. In addition to considering the daily essentials of those affected, this partnership will also explore the best methods for providing psychosocial support, and then provide that support in a way that enriches the community in which they live.

“The city of Mykolaiv welcomes strong and effective partnerships with HOPE worldwide and The Salvation Army,” said Mykolaiv City Mayor Oleksandr Sinkevych. “Thanks to this, we have helped save the lives of people who are suffering from hunger in the south of Ukraine. Our city thanks HOPE worldwide and The Salvation Army for their cooperation and looks forward to the implementation of future projects."

"The Salvation Army's partnership with HOPE worldwide is a wonderful example of how we continually strive to do the most good,” said Commissioner Kenneth Hodder, National Commander of The Salvation Army. “With more than 8 million individuals displaced and millions more impacted by the ongoing unrest in Ukraine, our goal is to support these individuals wholeheartedly with physical, emotional and spiritual care. This is because of our continual commitment to provide support to all people in need both nationally and internationally.”

To date, HOPE worldwide has delivered more than $28 million in medicines and trauma supplies, served 500,000 hot meals within multiple locations in Ukraine, Poland, and Moldova, provided over 50,000 food baskets and deliveries, including over 1,500 weekly food deliveries, and helped to place more than 1,500 refugees in 37 cities into safe housing within Europe. The partnership between The Salvation Army and HOPE worldwide will continue these efforts to provide on-the-ground support to displaced Ukrainian refugees.

“It is only through strong partnerships and the heart of generosity of donors and organizations like The Salvation Army that we can respond during these critical times and help to support the people of Ukraine when they need it most,” said Dave Malutinok, president and CEO of HOPE worldwide. “With this generous donation, our partnership with The Salvation Army will help us continue directing resources to support displaced Ukrainians by supplying desperately needed food, supplies, psychosocial support, and more.”

Oleksandr Romanishyn, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine 2020-2021 said, “Together with my colleagues, we support residents of the de-occupied territories of the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions. International support from HOPE worldwide and its partners like The Salvation Army will help us survive during these difficult times and rebuild Ukraine.”

The Salvation Army’s Eastern European Territory, which includes Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine have provided more than 122,000 food-related items, over 25,000 hygiene items, 6, 500+ nights of shelter, and emotional and spiritual care to over 9,500 people. This represents only some of the ways The Salvation Army is serving the people of Ukraine, continually striving to live up to our promise and commitment of “Doing The Most Good”.
