The Salvation Army established the first National Donut Day in 1938 in Chicago.

Donuts and “doing good” have always gone hand in hand. During World War I, Salvation Army “Donut Lassies” served donuts to soldiers. Today, we continue to celebrate their work by delivering the sweet treat to those in need – and to donut lovers across the country.

 

Celebrating National Donut Day from Coast to Coast

On June 7, Salvation Army staff and volunteers will celebrate National Donut Day by delivering donuts and hosting events across the country. For an event in your area, please contact your local Salvation Army.

Donutland

The Salvation Army of Minneapolis will host a weekend-long event featuring four large art installations at the Rosedale Center, Friday, June 7, through Sunday, June 9. These fun and bright exhibits will encourage the public to take photos, learn about The Salvation Army’s history, and engage with The Salvation Army in a fresh and fun way.

Giving Is Sweet on Donut Day

Daylight Donuts, Dunkin’, Regal Bakery, and 7-Eleven are partnering with The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands to donate proceeds from National Donut Day sales to local Salvation Army Corps. Customers are invited to join in the giving spirit by donating to a Red Kettle on-site at their favorite donut shop including Krispy Kreme and Pipeline Bakery & Creamery. And local fast-food restaurant chain Zippy’s and 7-Eleven will be accepting monetary donations at their registers through the entire month of June.

National Donut-Eating Contest

The Salvation Army of Southern California and BakeMark will host the third annual Donut Eating Championship. Major League Eating and its stable of eating superstars, including No. 1-ranked female Miki Sudo, will bring the excitement of competitive eating to the iconic USS Midway in San Diego Harbor. Sudo will be available for interviews on Thursday, June 6.

Donut Day Culinary Program

The Culinary Arts Training Program in Sacramento is part of the workforce development program designed to give those who’ve struggled with homelessness and addiction a chance to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the culinary industry. For Donut Day, the program is hosting a special donut-making lesson and inviting media to attend. They will be using the traditional “Donut Girl” recipe and possibly introducing a new and improved twist on the classic donut they created.

Donut Flavor Craze Contest

Bashas’, Arizona’s hometown grocer, is partnering with The Salvation Army of Arizona for their annual Donut Flavor Craze Contest – where entrants submit donut flavor creations encapsulating what they love most about Arizona. A panel of judges, including a local Salvation Army officer, will select one child and one adult winner, and Bashas’ will donate 10% of the proceeds from all donut sales on Donut Day to The Salvation Army.
