Earthquake Relief

No matter where an earthquake strikes, The Salvation Army will be there, long-term, to help rebuild.

Earthquakes can happen without warning.  And despite the fact that they typically last only a few seconds, they have the ability to leave entire homes, lives, and communities shattered.

If you or your loved ones have survived an earthquake and need immediate help, please contact your local Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army’s Earthquake Relief Services

When a powerful earthquake takes place, The Salvation Army is among the first to arrive on the scene. In all of our work, we employ a holistic approach to meet the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of those served. Our core earthquake relief services include:

Emergency Relief

The Salvation Army works with partner organizations to meet survivors’ most basic needs by providing food, clean water, clothing, blankets, shelter, and medical services. Our mobile feeding units and mobile showers help us reach as many people as possible. And our emergency and temporary shelters give people who have lost everything a place to go.

Donations Management

When disaster strikes, there is often an outpouring of compassion and donations. The Salvation Army’s donation management team responsibly collects, sorts, and distributes donated goods to disaster survivors. The Salvation Army encourages cash donations as the best and most flexible way to help, and solicits only those in-kind donations which can be effectively received and efficiently distributed.

Long-Term Recovery and Investment

Meeting the needs of survivors immediately after an earthquake is one thing, but helping communities rebuild in the years to come–even after the media cycle and donation frenzy have moved on–is a whole other level of commitment. The Salvation Army leads long-term recovery efforts for as long as a community requires us. We work with families for months, even years, after a disaster to help families get back on their feet and rebuild their lives. For instance, The Salvation Army, which has had a presence in Puerto Rico since 1962, was one of the first relief organizations on the spot when the U.S. territory was hit with an unprecedented 1,300 earthquakes in three weeks.

National and International Cooperation

The Salvation Army works collaboratively with local, state, federal, and international partners to provide emergency services and long-term support. For instance, we have a long-standing partnership with FEMA that allows us to operate more effectively within the United States. We believe that working together is an essential part of any disaster relief mission. Together, we can do the most good.

Emotional and Spiritual Care

Motivated by our Christian faith, The Salvation Army deploys specially trained individuals to offer emotional and spiritual care to rescue workers and disaster survivors.

Earthquakes: A Uniquely Devastating Natural Disaster

Unlike other natural disasters like hurricanes and floods, earthquakes often strike without warning, giving people little time to prepare. And though they often only last a few seconds, the initial quake and smaller aftershocks cause widespread damage to homes and infrastructure, scarring communities for years to come. Additionally, whenever earthquakes strike near coastal areas, they can cause a tsunami, leading to further devastation. After an earthquake, thousands of people may be left homeless and struggling to access medical care.

Every year, there are 20,000 earthquakes around the globe. On average, 16 of these are major earthquakes (magnitude 7 or greater) and cause massive destruction. With a presence in more than 130 countries, The Salvation Army has a vast network of experts, volunteers, and resources to help those in need when they need it the most.

Earthquake Preparedness

Earthquake preparedness is an essential part of saving lives before disaster strikes. Every year, The Salvation Army’s disaster training program offers a variety of courses designed to help individuals and communities prepare for emergency events and become trained disaster volunteers.

Everyone–especially people living in earthquake-prone areas–should develop an emergency preparedness plan and assemble preparedness kits to help them respond quickly in case of an emergency. We have a disaster preparedness handbook that includes a helpful checklist for family earthquake preparedness.
