Salvation Army officials break ground on camp expansion project

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb.—Salvation Army officials and local partners broke ground on the Western Plains Camp Project’s second phase July 21.

The $10 million addition will add new features and buildings to the property, including a pavilion, tabernacle, a challenge course, and a chapel with classrooms.

"This is happening thanks to a lot of generous donors, plus the support of our friends right here in South Sioux City, Nebraska and Sioux City, Iowa," said Western Division commander Major Scott Shelbourn.

As divisional leader Major Jolinda Shelbourn pointed out, the new phase will be in addition to the extensive work that was already done at the camp over the last few years.

"We have a gorgeous camp, and I'm so glad that it's here," she said.

She also talked about the new, camping-focused infrastructure that phase two will add.

"That will be called the Gene Eppley Outdoor Camp,” she said.  “There will be areas for tents and also a storm shelter and bathrooms and showers.  That will also help us with all of the other activities that are planned out there by the woods—the challenge course, the archery.”

She added that it is all for summer camp youth — to help them have fun, learn, and deepen their relationship with God.

Rogelio Rodriguez of the South Sioux City Area Chamber — who also spoke at the groundbreaking in July — is no stranger to the camp.

"I have some good memories here,” he said.  “I know we've used this space for a lot of things in the community, and so to see it be expanded on is an absolute blessing and just such a good, positive thing for the community."

A representative for architectural and engineering firm Schemmer spoke about the creative process for the camp’s addition.

"When we began designing this space, we really thought about the moments that would happen here: Campers gathering for adventures, friends sharing meals and stories, leaders teaching lessons that inspire confidence and connection," Malik Darwish said.

Siouxland Chamber of Commerce member Ben Howard said he is grateful for the impact this addition will have on the community.

"Thank you for your investment in our Siouxland community; thank you for continuing to grow your camp."
