How We Help Cure Hunger
The Salvation Army of Des Moines welcomes anyone in need who walks through our doors, including the homeless, people down on their luck and in need of a little extra help, older adults, and families struggling to feed their growing children.
Food Pantries
- Food Pantries program strengths: The food pantries feed thousands of families each year, offering nonperishable food items and fresh produce when available.
- Food Pantry location: The Salvation Army Capital Area Command has a client choice food pantry at 1400 NW 100th St.
- Food Pantry hours:
- Monday-CLOSED
- Tuesday-9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Wednesday-9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Thursday-CLOSED
- Friday-9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Weekends-CLOSED.

- Our main food pantry and Citadel location both have anytime racks as well as produce as available Monday through Friday.
Mobile Breakfast Service
- Mobile Breakfast Service schedule: The Mobile Breakfast Canteen goes out on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. On Tuesdays, it will move through the north side. On Thursdays, it moves through downtown. Wednesdays start around 8 a.m. and go through the south side.

Our mobile breakfast service serves a hot egg casserole, as well as beverages, individually boxed cereals, donuts, hard-boiled eggs and other items when available to approximately 1,000 homeless and near-homeless people. To file a program discrimination complaint, a Complainant should complete Form AD-3027, USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form which can be obtained online at: www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/ad-3027.pdf, from any USDA office, or by calling 1-866-632-9992 or by writing a letter addressed to USDA. The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation. The completed AD-3027 form or letter must be submitted to:

We strive to provide the most nutritious food possible in order to improve the health and well-being of people in our community. Our food pantries provide 10,000 families in the Des Moines area with nutritious food every year, and our mobile breakfast service feeds another 1,000 homeless and low-income individuals each week.
