The Salvation Army in Kent County in Need of More Toys this Holiday Season

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (July 28, 2026) – In 2025, over 17,000 toys were distributed to 4,691 children. This was an increase from previous years to help meet the growing need in the community. 

Even with their Angel Tree program start more than two months away, The Salvation Army in Kent County already knows they will need more toys to serve as many or more children than last year. 

“The number of businesses hosting Angel Trees sites has been strong, but our resources were depleted last year, including any leftover toys from previous years.  We could definitely use more host sites for 2026 and would gladly welcome participants from any previous year and also new locations,” said Major Jenny Ortman, Kent County Services and Program director.

“It may seem early to be asking for asking for toys,” said Kent County Coordinator Major Aaron Ortman. “However, we know from past years, that the number of people applying for Christmas assistance almost always increases. Countless families face the heartbreaking reality of being unable to provide gifts for their children. Christmas shouldn’t be a time of worry; it should be a time joy.”

People can help now by shopping at a year-round Angel Tree in Kent County Amazon registry, or by donating at SaKentCounty.org. The nonprofit will also have information at its Christmas in July event at the West Michigan Whitecaps which is Friday, July 31 at 6:35 p.m. at LMCU Ballpark.
