Shelter

Women's Shelter

The Salvation Army of Dane County provides our community’s only emergency shelter specifically for individuals identifying as women or non-male. Our women’s shelter serves as a temporary, emergency solution to homelessness, offering safety, support, and essential services.

The shelter operates nighttime-only, 7 days a week, with no limit on the length of stay. Guests receive three meals a day, access to showers and laundry facilities, and the opportunity to meet with case managers to address barriers to housing and work toward stable living arrangements.

Check-In and Shelter Guidelines

Check-in is from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. Guests are expected to remain in the shelter for the night after check-in.

All guests must be inside by 8:30 p.m., unless prior arrangements have been made.

If you are working, attending school, or have a mandatory meeting during check-in, you may reserve a bed by calling 608-250-2226 before 5:00 p.m. on the same day. Proof of employment, school attendance, or a mandatory meeting is required.

Extreme Weather Policy

During nights of extreme cold (20°F or below) or severe weather, all women in need are welcome, regardless of usual capacity or shelter limits. While space may be limited, no one will be turned away. Guests are expected to follow shelter rules; serious behavioral issues may result in temporary suspension of access, even during extreme weather nights.

Family Shelter

The Salvation Army offers a family shelter for up to 35 families experiencing homelessness. Family shelter operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no time limit on length of stay. Guests are provided 3 meals a day and have access to showers and laundry facilities. Families also have the opportunity to meet with case managers to help overcome the barriers to housing.

Currently, the shelter is at capacity. Families in need of shelter, and would like to be added to the waitlist should call the family shelter intake line at (608) 250-2298, leaving name, family size, and contact information. Families who call in for shelter using the intake line are contacted by the Diversion Specialist within 24 hours to help families assess alternative options to shelter. If no alternatives are identified, the family is added to the family shelter waitlist. Families are asked to call in once a week to remain active on the waitlist. Families can expect to receive a call back once a week to confirm they are still on the waitlist.

When a shelter room becomes available, the family will be notified, and an intake time will be scheduled. Families will be provided with shelter guidelines and supplies, and will also be assigned a housing case manager.

This institution is an equal opportunity provider.
