How We Help Provide Housing and Assistance
We are a nonprofit organization that works to alleviate human suffering and distress without discrimination. Our Emergency Shelter Services help residents break the cycle of homelessness by providing shelter, case management support, and referrals to community partners that specialize in addressing the many barriers individuals experiencing homelessness may face.
Please note: We do not currently offer rent assistance.
Utility Assistance
Millions of people across the country are forced into making a choice between things like being able to keep the lights on or put food on their family's table.
We believe no one should have to make a decision like that, so we provide utility assistance and relief to those who need it. We have always fought to ensure that no one goes without heat in the coldest winters, air conditioning in the brutal summers or fresh water to drink and bathe in.
Emergency Shelters
2 W grace street: Serving single men and families who are experiencing homelessnes.
1900 Chamberlayne avenue: Serving single men who are experiencing homelessness.

Case Management
Our case managers concentrate on helping residents identify problems that may have contributed to their homelessness, including substance abuse, employment, education deficiencies, financial mismanagement and mental health.
Staff assist each resident in developing realistic goals to overcome their situations. Substance abuse, motivational, and ‘Life Skills Enrichment’ meetings are conducted weekly at the shelter.
Refereral Services
We provide referral services as part of our broader community services. This includes connecting individuals and families with resources for various needs, such as housing, food, financial assistance and educational opportunities.
Building wealth & health network
This a free, 16-session curriculum over eight weeks, promoting financial literacy and self empowerment.
Participation is limited to Richmond City residents who care for one or more children, 18-years or younger.

The Salvation Army understands the impact of unexpected life changes that can affect household income and lead to housing instability. Maybe you lost your job. Maybe you’re a senior living on a fixed income. Maybe you’re living with a long-term disability. If so, we are here for you. Throughout the country, The Salvation Army’s emergency assistance programs are helping families with rent assistance and utility help so they can keep the power and water on, fill prescriptions, and access transportation when necessary. The Salvation Army connects people with the resources they need to help their families stay afloat.
