Tips for Staying Safe in Hot Weather
As the temperatures climb this summer, it’s important to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community from the dangers of extreme summer heat. The Salvation Army is committed to your well-being. Follow these practical tips to stay safe and healthy all summer long:
Stay Cool
- Seek air-conditioned spaces: Stay indoors as much as possible, especially during the hottest parts of the day. If you don’t have air conditioning, visit libraries, shopping centers, movie theaters, malls, community centers, or Salvation Army cooling shelters in your area.
- Take cool showers or baths: This can help quickly reduce your body temperature.
- Rest in the shade: If you need to be outside, find shady spots and take frequent breaks, especially around noon to 4PM, when the sun is hottest.
- Wear appropriate clothing: Choose lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothes to help your body stay cool. Use a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun
Stay Hydrated
- Drink plenty of fluids: Water is best. Don’t wait until you are thirsty—drink small amounts throughout the day. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary beverages as these can dehydrate you.
- Include electrolyte-rich drinks if you are sweating a lot or doing physical activity.
- Watch for dehydration: Symptoms can include dry mouth, headache, dizziness, or dark-colored urine. If you notice any of these, increase your fluid intake right away.
Protect Yourself and Others
- Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle: The temperature inside cars can rise quickly and become deadly.
- Check on family, friends, and neighbors: Especially seniors, young children, people living alone, or anyone without air conditioning. Consider helping them get to a cooling center if needed.
- Use the buddy system: When working or spending extended time outdoors, do so with others who can help in an emergency.
Be proactive and prepared. Extreme heat can affect anyone, but with vigilance and the right steps, you can keep yourself and your community safe this July!
If you or someone you know needs immediate relief from the heat or assistance with paying energy bills, The Salvation Army is here to help. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe this summer.
