Central Ohio Area Services Utility Rent Assistance Information

Utility and rent assistance is available seasonally as funds are available to households who meet income guidelines as set out by the specific program providing the funding.

  • Neighbor to Neighbor: Assistance for AEP Ohio customers who are facing disconnect (or have had service terminated), who have paid at least $75 on their electric bill in the last 90 days, who have a minimum outstanding balance of at least $50 on their bill which is at least 30 days behind, and who meet income guidelines of 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.  You can fill out an online application here or an appointment is required with a Salvation Army caseworker to determine eligibility, review documentation, and complete application. 
  • Heat Share: Assistance grants from Columbia Gas which helps with up to $450 to prevent Columbia Gas shut-off or to reconnect service. Clients must meet income guidelines of 300% of federal poverty guidelines.

HeatShare is a utility assistance program designed to help Columbia Gas of Ohio customers experiencing financial hardships. Whether facing disconnection or needing to restore service, HeatShare offers grants to alleviate the burden of utility costs and keep families safe and warm.

How HeatShare Helps

HeatShare is here to assist with:

  • Preventing disconnections of gas service.
  • Reconnecting service for eligible customers.
  • Providing emergency grants of up to $450 per household annually.

Who Can Apply?

You may qualify for HeatShare if:

  • You are a Columbia Gas of Ohio customer.
  • Your household income is at or below 300% of the federal poverty line.
  • You have received a disconnection notice, are behind on payments, or have already had your service disconnected.
  • You are experiencing extreme financial hardship due to unexpected events like medical emergencies, job loss, or other crises.

How to Apply

Getting started is simple:

  1. Visit SAHelp.me to start your application online.
  2. Contact your local Salvation Army office for assistance. Use the SAHelp portal to search by ZIP code for nearby locations.
  3. Work with a Salvation Army caseworker to complete your application and provide the required documentation, such as income verification and utility bills.
