Senior Enrichment Programs

Many Salvation Army community centers have a dedicated program for some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, seniors. Our programs offer a sense of community and belonging for seniors by providing regularly scheduled activities including arts and crafts, special events, time for socializing with other seniors, and games.

Bensonhurst Corps Community Center

Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, has the largest population of residents born in China of anywhere in New York City, with nearly all clients at the community center being born in Asia, and many of them practicing Buddhists. Daily, our Bensonhurst Community and Worship Center provides a vibrant and active outlet for neighborhood seniors in the form of dance, Tai Chi, Chinese Opera, ESL classes, computer literacy, table tennis, and much more. Plus, the center has a subsidized lunch program which costs the seniors a small fee to enjoy a culturally appropriate meal with their peers.

Senior Camp

Many of our local community centers we provide seniors with partial camp scholarships to attend The Salvation Army’s Star Lake Camp for a stay of five days and four nights where they will be able to experience the beautiful outdoors, relax, socialize with peers, and enjoy camping activities (arts and crafts, fishing, swimming, paddle boating, nature walks, shuffleboard, karaoke, etc.).
