How We Serve
Bensonhurst Corps & Community Center
Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, has the largest population of residents born in China of anywhere in New York City, with nearly all clients at the community center being born in Asia, and many of them practicing Buddhists. Our Bensonhurst Community and Worship Center provides daily vibrant and active outlets for neighborhood seniors in the form of dance, Tai Chi, Chinese Opera, ESL classes, computer literacy, table tennis, and much more. Plus, the center has a subsidized lunch program which costs the seniors a small fee to enjoy a culturally appropriate meal with their peers.
Senior Camp
At many of our local Community Center, we provide seniors with partial camp scholarships to attend The Salvation Army’s Star Lake Camp for a stay of five days and four nights where they will be able to experience the beautiful outdoors, relax, socialize with peers, and enjoy camping activities (arts and crafts, fishing, swimming, paddle boating, nature walks, shuffleboard, karaoke, etc.).

The Salvation Army is dedicated to meeting the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors, including older New Yorkers who might typically spend their days alone at home.
Many of our centers provide regularly scheduled activities for seniors, including arts and crafts, special events, socialization, and games. Other opportunities through which we support our senior population include camp retreats and regular visits to extend care facilities. The Salvation Army is a safe haven for our senior populations, just as it is for people of all ages who are in need.

attended senior camp -- a weeklong getaway trip away from New York City and into the woods of Bloomingdale, New Jersey at Star Lake, a piece of land owned and operated by The Salvation Army New York for over a century.
500+ individuals
helped through P.E.A.R.L Essence New York, The Salvation Army's anti-human trafficking program, providing mobile outreach, emergency aid, and long-term support to survivors.
32 families
were enrolled and six graduated, from The Salvation Army's Pathway of Hope program -- a rigorous long-term case management program helping families break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.

Your donations will directly support programs for the elderly. This can include:
- Purchasing the tools and material necessary for arts and crafts
- More events and places where seniors can socialize with others
- Trips outside of the city like senior camp in Star Lake
