The Salvation Army operates three residences for homeless New Yorkers, including two shelters for families with children in Queens and a facility for men with substance abuse and mental health diagnoses in Brooklyn. Approximately 300 children sleep in our family shelters every night. In addition to offering shelter, The Salvation Army’s community centers provide ongoing services, creating a community and support system once families leave the shelter system.
While The Salvation Army has our own mobile street outreach team, we know that tackling homelessness is too vast of an issue for one group or agency; therefore, we are a proud member of the Rescue Alliance NYC. As a coalition of faith-based organizations determined to help New Yorkers experiencing homelessness, we share referrals to provide resources, clean and safe shelter, case management, and a pathway to stable, permanent housing.

Don't Walk By Outreach
Twice a year, during the summer and winter, The Rescue Alliance, a group of faith-based non-profit organizations, meet up to tackle homelessness on the streets of New York City for a day. The Salvation Army's emergency services team does everything it can to meet the needs of unhoused New Yorkers by providing meals, resources, health services, shelter, and more. During some of the most extreme weather months, volunteers from difference churches gather to serve on street teams or as on-sit support to reach neighbors living on the streets.

Our mobile outreach team, through the Social Service Response Program, meets hundreds of people on the streets each year. We provide food, hygiene kits, socks, and winter gear while working to build trust and connect individuals with shelter and supportive services.

Whether sleeping on a sidewalk, riding the subway to stay warm, or seeking help outside a coffee shop, The Salvation Army New York’s social service workers meet them where they are. We provide care to ensure their most urgent needs are met with dignity and compassion.
