Greater New York Holiday Assistance Information
Holiday Giving
Each year, The Salvation Army community centers help struggling New Yorkers by hosting special Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for our unhoused neighbors and use the meals as an opportunity to also distribute essential cold weather clothing. For neighbors with homes, the community centers provide turkeys and all the side dishes so families can enjoy holiday meals together without the financial strain of expensive grocery bills. Basic services are essential to those who can't afford to put food on the table or don't have access to hot meals while homeless. Our commitment to making sure the holidays are memorable for all New Yorkers and not having to choose between paying rent or having a special holiday meal will be an ongoing priority for The Salvation Army.
Angel Tree
The Salvation Army started the Angel Tree program back in 1979, when Majors Charles and Shirley White created it in Lynchburg, Virginia, to provide Christmas gifts for children in need. For almost 50 years, the Angel Tree program has been a beacon of hope for families facing tough times during the holidays. Angel Tree is operated in various Salvation Army locations spread across Greater New York, uniting the community to make a difference.
