Pathway of Hope (PoH)

Pathway of Hope of Greater New York is dedicated and committed to breaking and eradicating the Cycle of Intergenerational Poverty.

What is Pathway of Hope?

Pathway of Hope is a program created for families who are committed to working hard to change circumstances, and require a helping hand along the way. The Salvation Army is committed to going the distance to help these families achieve lasting change.

What We Do

The Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope (POH) initiative in the Greater New York division is a long-term approach implemented to help break intergenerational cycles of poverty. Families with children who are committed to using our strength-based case management, community resources, and pastoral care will be inspired and supported to achieve personal development.

A Graduate Tells Her Success Story

When a single mother with her three children enrolled in Pathway of Hope, she was fleeing domestic violence, depressed, and traumatized. On top of this, she had lost her job. To get by, the family relied on welfare benefits and housing assistance. After joining PoH, she got a professional level job and is actively engaged in counseling, as are her children. She moved off most welfare programs and is now receiving minimal assistance from them. Now, she is planning on returning to college to complete a degree that was interrupted by her difficult life circumstances.

Family who transformed their lives through Pathway of Hope

After losing everything to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, a family joined the Pathway of Hope program. When they arrived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, none of them spoke any English, making things difficult for some time. Through the family’s participation in the PoH initiative, the father was able to secure a job. Their daughters struggled in school, but with time they succeeded academically and learned English. Once a nurse on the island, the mother used the resources provided by PoH and pursued her nursing license in Pennsylvania and is now working in the medical field.
