
Emergency Lodge Homeless Shelter
The needs of the homeless population are varied and complex.
Since 1979, the 120-bed Emergency Lodge, located at 1730 N 7th St. in Milwaukee, has provided emergency shelter to homeless individuals and families with children. Lodge staff are dedicated to connecting residents to all applicable resources to help them move torward permanent housing.
How to request accommodations
Regular lodge beds for single males, single females and/or families:·
- The Lodge does not take walk-in referrals, instead utilizing Coordinated Entry/211 for screening and referrals for any openings.
- Contact 211/Coordinated Entry at (414) 773-0211 for possible placement.
Department of Corrections Beds at Lodge
Individuals on probation and/or parole, should speak with their agent about next steps for possible placement at the Lodge.

Resident Requirements
- Residents must be drug and alcohol-free
- Each resident is assigned a primary social worker to develop an individualized plan for self-sufficiency
- Residents must establish income, either through employment or benefits, and save a percentage of their income in preparation for their move to housing in the community
Accommodations
- Residents stay in semi-private rooms
- Three nutritious meals are served per day
- There are laundry facilities available

Our free medical clinic is located within the Emergency Lodge and serves community members as well as shelter residents. Patients do not need to have insurance. Services include basic health care assessments, blood work, TB testing, depression screening, medication, vaccines, and more. The clinic is staffed by a nurse, a social worker, a mental health counselor, and volunteer primary care providers who can address point-of-entry health issues and assist patients in finding a primary care provider if they have insurance.

- Since June 2015, we have had a full-time Mental Health Counselor on staff. She is a Wisconsin Licensed Professional Counselor, a National Certified Counselor and provides accessible on-site mental health counseling services for all residents including the corrections program. Counseling services are offered to clients who have left the shelter after successfully completing the program or for other reasons. Counseling services may continue to be coordinated including off-site visits. Mental health services currently include:
- Emergency consultations and assessments for shelter residents
- Mental Health assessments for Social Security applications, W-2 and housing programs for The Salvation Army

- Respite Care Program
- Respite shelter beds are available for medically vulnerable adults who are self-care, have an acute medical condition, and are experiencing homelessness. Nursing services and assistance with medical appointments are provided.
