From Fugitive to Faithful: The miraculous testimony of Jon Anderson
Not long ago, Jon Anderson was facing 23 years in prison. The West St. Paul native was a career criminal who’d been arrested 67 times throughout his life for drug trafficking and identity theft, defrauding victims of an estimated $2 million.
“I was always armed, always looking for trouble,” recalled Jon, now 43.
One of his final arrests occurred in 2016. Rather than face the consequences, he fled to southern California and became a fugitive.
He spent seven years in California working for a construction company, using drugs daily. In early 2023, police identified Jon during a routine traffic stop. He was taken into custody and extradited to Minnesota to face charges in four counties.
While in Anoka County Jail awaiting his court appearance, Jon found out about The Salvation Army’s rehabilitation facility in Minneapolis, which provides free, faith-based, long-term rehabilitation services. He knew he needed the help but was reluctant to apply.
On the day of his first court appearance, a judge told Jon there was a chance his sentence could be reduced if he completed The Salvation Army rehabilitation program. Jon enrolled in the program, hoping for a chance at a new beginning.
One month into the program, he knelt at the altar and surrendered his life to Jesus Christ.
“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done—but it was also the most important thing,” Jon said. “From that moment on, everything changed.”
After much prayer, Jon decided to plead guilty to all of his charges. Miraculously, he was sentenced to just 5 years of probation, with a 23-year prison sentence stayed. Today, he works at the rehabilitation center and is an active member of The Salvation Army’s church in North Minneapolis.
“I don’t have the words to express the gratitude I have for The Salvation Army,” Jon said. “I want to show as many people as I can that change is possible—no matter what you’ve gone through.”
