These interconnected struggles continue year after year, and often span generations. That's why The Salvation Army works to meet the needs of the whole person through short and long-term assistance - first alleviating the symptoms of poverty and then addressing the root issues that cause it.
We understand that poverty can be a complex issue with far-reaching consequences. Our dedicated local team works closely with individuals and families in the community to assess their needs and connect them with appropriate resources.

We offer a variety of services in Peoria Metro Area to help people overcome financial challenges, address housing and food insecurity, find employment, and build stronger communities.

Food Pantries
The Salvation Army of Bloomington offers food pantry services for residents of McLean county. Food boxes may include shelf-stable pantry items, breads, cereals, meat and other household necessities. Contact us for more information.
Safe Harbor Shelter
Safe Harbor Shelter program provides services to homeless individuals over the age of 18 who are otherwise displaced or do not have adequate housing and are forced to sleep on the streets. Safe Harbor is a congregate facility with fifty beds, 32 in the men’s dorm, and 18 in the women's dorm. The shelter is open to non-resident individuals during the day to access a place to stay, food to eat, hot showers, and laundry facilities. All individuals have access to case managers, employment specialists, and pastoral care.

Because housing insecurity is strongly linked to prolonged poverty, The Salvation Army works to provide short- and long-term housing assistance to displaced families and individuals. In efforts to help maintain each person's health, dignity, and stability, we provide 10.8 million nights of safe, climate-controlled shelter every year.
Meal Assistance
One of the hallmarks of poverty is the painful choice between heating and eating. That is, families must decide whether they'll pay their bills or pay for food. They do not have sufficient funds to do both. To help combat this impossible position, each year, The Salvation Army serves over 60 million warm, nutritious meals to those in need.
Bill-Pay Assistance
We help struggling families avoid falling into the cycle of crisis by supplementing their income with utility, rent, and other vital payments. Oftentimes, this assistance becomes the difference between shelter and eviction, between maintaining honest work and selling drugs or services for money, and between keeping kids in one place and moving them out of their home and onto the streets.
Employment Assistance
As part of our comprehensive approach to helping families climb out of poverty, we equip moms and dads with educational resources, career coaching, and job placement opportunities. By qualifying and directing individuals to achieve stable and gainful employment, we help reduce the need for bill-pay, feeding, and shelter assistance
Supportive Services for Veteran Families
The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program is designed to assist low-income veterans and their families in obtaining and maintaining permanent stable housing. The Supportive Services for Veteran Families team strives to assist Veterans and their families through strengths-based goal planning to address current gaps in the Veteran’s ability to secure or maintain stable and sustainable permanent housing.
