Meaningful Experiences: A Camp Mihaska Series – Part 2
From past to present, the land on which Camp Mihaska was built has brought myriad emotions for those who know its history. Originally home to an indigenous tribe, it became the site of a historic plane crash in 1947. When the property was donated to The Salvation Army in 1948, it was restored to a happier memory with the presence of hundreds of campers annually.
The three crosses you see on the hilltop at Camp Mihaska are said to be for two pilots who passed away in the crash, and the Holy Spirit.
Carla Von Hoffman, whose great grandfather bought the property in 1920, lost her father and uncle in the crash; she was in her mother’s womb. Carla never had the opportunity to meet them. Hear the story from her perspective:
The familial bond created at Camp Mihaska is one that’s inherent to the property – it’s something you can feel when walking the grounds. Camper Justian Sander knows that feeling of “home” and joy all too well.
Joy is Contagious at Camp
Justian Sander

Justian is a young man from St. Louis who, before attending camp, had never spent much time outside of the city. However, one summer, he had the opportunity to spend three weeks at camp with kids from all over Missouri and Illinois. One of his favorite things about camp was the new friendships he made.
"My friends aren’t just from St. Louis now."
Coming from a large family with two older sisters and two younger sisters, Justian was the only boy. He appreciated the chance to spend time and have "sleepovers" with other boys his age – something he hadn’t experienced at home.
While Justian enjoyed many activities at camp, one of his favorite places, after the pool, was the dining hall.
"I got to eat everything I wanted," he said with a smile, recalling the variety of meals and snacks available.
Like many campers, Justian quickly learned that managing his money was part of the camp experience. His first day at camp, Justian had spent all his money at the on-site Sweet Shop – another big attraction for campers. The next time Justian returned to camp, he reminded himself to "take it slow," just as his dad had instructed. These simple life lessons are foundational to success as children grow, and they’re communicated in a way that drives excitement around learning.
Justian’s joy and energy were contagious. Whether it was his singing and dancing during chapel or participating in camp songs, he helped lift the spirits of his cabinmates and encouraged everyone to join in. His positive attitude also showed during Music and Creative Arts Camp, where Justin worked hard to help his "house" win the intercamp competition by staying on task—cleaning up after class, arriving on time for activities, and paying attention to instructions. Though he occasionally struggled to remember all the instructions, he took corrections in stride and never appeared discouraged.
In addition to his enthusiasm for camp life, Justian responded deeply to the Bible teachings. He could answer questions about the lessons and reflect on their meanings. Although Justian had accepted Jesus as his Savior before coming to camp, he grew in his faith during the week, especially as his counselors led devotions each night. These moments of reflection helped him draw closer to God and deepen his understanding of Jesus.
Justian’s story is just one of many that demonstrate how Camp Mihaska touches the lives of campers each summer. Through new friendships, personal growth and a deeper connection to faith, Justian's experience at camp was one of transformation that will stay with him for years to come.
