The Salvation Army Opens a Free Grocery Store

The Salvation Army Prospect Corps, located at 6025 Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri has officially opened the new Hope Market grocery store on Friday, July 10th, 2026.

Hunger is an ongoing problem across the country and right here in the metro area. The Salvation Army is at the forefront of this need, and people know to come to us for food, feeding programs and pantry visits that help those who are struggling financially to make ends meet. 

The Hope Market is a different concept. Just like a grocery store, visitors can grab a shopping cart and proceed to shop the aisles by themselves for preferred staples or culturally acceptable food items. Unlike a grocery store, all food is free of charge.

The store will operate on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am-3pm, with plans for expanded hours with additional volunteers. Utilizing key donations from a partnership with Harvesters, The Salvation Army Hope Market expects to provide for 150 families residing in the Prospect Corps service area every week.

“The Salvation Army and Harvesters are working together to distribute much-needed food,” said Lieutenant Donald Cooper, Director of the Prospect Corps. “This concept eliminates the stigma and puts dignity back into a process that can sometimes be overwhelming for seniors and the poor.”

The Salvation Army also offers a free produce program called “Fresh Fridays” which is a drive thru pickup that services 400 cars every Friday, from the same location starting at 1pm.
