The Salvation Army of Emporia, Kansas is Weathered, but Still Working

Kansas is a rambling state with its share of cities and towns. Located between Topeka and Wichita lays a small, quintessential hard-working city in the heart of America, with lots of Kansas grit.

Emporia is planted in Lyon County and is the county seat. A city of 24 thousand that is home to Emporia State University and is the birthplace of Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist, William Allen White. This town has weathered lots of challenges but has held on to the things that make it great. 

The Salvation Army of Lyon County has been here since 1894, over 130 years of serving this community. Maintaining a presence here has been a priority. With nearly 20% of residents below the poverty line, people continue to rely on us for help. 

The Salvation Army of Emporia, Kansas the largest choice food pantry, which is open three days a week by appointment, providing meals for over 30 homes per week. The Salvation Army of Emporia, Kansas also has vital program that include rent and utility assistance to keep people in their homes, Christmas assistance, and our Angel Tree toy program. Operating down the street is our Salvation Army thrift store which provides affordable clothing and household goods. 

Scattered across three buildings with aging facilities, our biggest need continues to be resources. But Officers posted in Emporia know how work with what they have, moving forward and reflecting the classic midwestern values of hard work, humility and sacrifice.
