The Olathe, KS Corps is Here to Help
The Olathe Corps serves as a beacon of hope for families across Olathe and Johnson County facing crisis. At the heart of its work is a 14-unit Family Lodge shelter, providing safe housing for families experiencing homelessness in conjunction with individualized case management focused on employment, income stabilization, budgeting, childcare coordination, and permanent housing placement. Pathway of Hope offers long-term, life skills-based case management to help families break cycles of poverty through financial literacy, education, and workforce development.
The Corps Hospitality Center meets immediate needs by offering hygiene supplies, restroom access, phone charging, grab-and-go meals, and resource referrals, while a private shower program provides 30-minute appointments for neighbors experiencing homelessness. The Red Shield Youth Program delivers before-and-afterschool care, summer day camp, and ongoing enrichment opportunities in a safe, structured environment.
Food Program Services:
The client-choice food pantry serves 30–50 households each week, allowing families to select groceries that best meet their needs. The daily lunch program provides 40–60 meals per day (200–300 weekly), while the Hospitality Center distributes 50–75 grab-and-go meals each week. A Wednesday community dinner serves approximately 30 meals weekly to foster connection and belonging, and Sunday breakfast nourishes 30–40 individuals before worship. Market Church, held on the fourth Sunday of each month, combines grocery distribution with worship and serves 50–60 households monthly.

Immediate Needs:
The Olathe Corps consistently needs hygiene products, especially feminine hygiene items, along with fresh produce and protein sources for food distribution. Partnerships with mental health and trauma-informed counseling providers are vital, as are volunteers during peak service hours. The Corps is also actively seeking affordable housing partners and landlord relationships to expand housing placement options for families.
Long-Term Vision:
Long term, the corps seeks to expand emergency shelter capacity, increase transitional housing opportunities, and grow the rent and utility assistance fund. A key initiative is the Lodge Room Adopter program, inviting donors to sponsor a Family Lodge room with a one-time $700 gift and $2,800 annually to cover furnishings, linens, and ongoing needs. Donations of needed items through the Family Lodge Walmart registry help provide essential supplies and directly support families staying in the shelter.
Leadership:
Captains Nate and Cherie Woodard have served as Salvation Army Officers for more than five years in Olathe. .
