Types of opportunities
One-time Volunteer Opportunities
Our one-time opportunities are perfect for those who want a quick and easy way to make a difference. These include activities like serving a meal any day of the year or ringing a bell during the holidays.
Group Volunteer Opportunities

We can accommodate your group’s desire to do something good together – whether family, friends, coworkers, civic or church groups. Group volunteer activities are typically project-based or part of a larger event.
Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
Ongoing opportunities are designed for those who want to get involved regularly. We’ll know you by your first name, and you’ll get to know the people in our programs. These include activities like working with youth, using your professional skills, or serving after a disaster strikes.

Volunteers are needed throughout the week to support the Bed & Bread trucks' daily food distribution on the streets of Detroit. There are two shifts each day: 8:00 am - 11:00 am and 11:30 am - 2:30 pm
To book yourself or a group to make and/or distribute meals for the Detroit Bed & Bread program, please contact Sunday Moore at adam.walker@usc.salvationarmy.org

If you are interested in riding along on the truck to assist in food distribution, here is what to expect:
- Arrive at the Detroit Harbor Light (3737 Lawton St., Detroit) between 11:30 am - 11:45 am.
- Pull up to the intercom and state your reason for being there.
- Park and go to the front desk to check in. Someone will come to meet you.
- You will leave on the truck around 11:50 am (one volunteer per truck)
- Each stop will take approximately 15-20 minutes.
- For safety reasons, do not leave the truck during its stops.
- Clients will line up outside the truck, and you will serve them through the window.
- The Bed & Bread truck driver will explain the specifics of what to do.
- The food being served will depend on the day.
- If it is cold, you may be ladling soup and hot chocolate into cups. Or handing out sandwiches and other food.
- Once all of the stops have been completed, you will arrive back at Harbor Light between 5:00/6:00 p.m.

Our iconic Red Kettle is a staple during the Christmas season. From November 1 to December 31, hundreds of families, school groups, corporate groups, and individuals register to ring for The Salvation Army.
This fundraising effort enables us to reach those who would otherwise be forgotten. Volunteer bell ringers have a tremendous impact by helping us serve their local community. We can never have too many bell ringers in! Volunteers work in two-hour shifts, typically ringing at a storefront.
Go to registertoring.com to sign up as a bell ringer.
You can also set up your own virtual red kettle during the Christmas Season.

Each of our corps community centers offers access to a food pantry, which is replenished weekly. Volunteer assistance is needed for shelf replenishment, packaging, and distribution. Search your zip code to find your local corps.

Our Emergency Disaster Services assists emergency responders and disaster survivors as needed. Join our team of trained volunteers who respond to local disasters, fires, and events in our community. Be the first on the front lines to lend hydration, food, and physical/emotional/spiritual support to our local fire and police departments. Learn more.

Many of our corps community centers host monthly senior luncheons, which provide local seniors with an opportunity to connect over a delicious meal. Volunteers are needed to set up and serve meals. Search your zip code to find your local corps.
