For nearly three years, Briana has been a familiar face at The Salvation Army of Alma Corps Community Center, lending a helping hand wherever it’s needed. From organizing food pantry shelves and packing grocery boxes to assisting with Christmas toy distribution, Briana’s dedication to serving others has made a meaningful difference in her community. What began as a desire to give back — and a connection to her great-grandmother’s legacy with The Salvation Army — has grown into a rewarding volunteer experience that has impacted not only those she serves, but Briana herself. We recently sat down with Briana to learn more about her volunteer journey.

Q: How did you first get involved with The Salvation Army?

A: I wanted to help the community. I learned that my great-grandmother worked for The Salvation Army many years ago, so I thought this would be a great thing to do. I thought it was fitting to also be part of The Salvation Army since I'm named after her.

Q: What are some of the things you do as volunteer?

A: It's a long list! I help with stocking and filling the food pantry boxes. During Christmas, I help scan and organize donated toys. I also help with general cleaning and other odds and ends that the staff asks me to do.

Q: Has there been a moment while volunteering that has stuck with you?

A: I would have to say Christmas. Definitely helping out with giving little kids things they could really use when their parents are struggling. Seeing the smiles and excitement on the kids’ faces is the best part.

Q: How have you seen your volunteer efforts make a difference?

A: My neighbor, Mary, moved in next door about two years ago, and I've helped her out with the food pantry. When she can't make it over here, I'll deliver the food to her house. I've also delivered food to my mother-in-law. I would do that for others, too, because I know how hard it can be when you don't have a car or reliable transportation. I've been there before, so I like to help when I can.

Q: Have you gained anything unexpected through volunteering?

A: I've definitely come a long way since I started volunteering here. At first, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the longer I've been here, the more I've enjoyed it. The Salvation Army staff have been wonderful, and helping out in the community has been really rewarding. They've kept me coming back because of how kind they are—not only to me, but to everyone they serve. They've also helped me get out of my shell. I've always been a stay-at-home mom focused on taking care of my kids, but volunteering here has helped me branch out, meet new people and speak up more. I feel like I have a voice now and am more connected to my community.

Q: What would you say to someone who says they are too busy to volunteer?

A: I've felt that way plenty of times, especially as a stay-at-home mom taking care of three kids, so I definitely understand. But even if it's only an hour here and there or once a month, I feel like it's something most people can fit in if they want to help.

Q: How has volunteering changed the way you view your community?

A: I think it's a good thing for people to get out there in their community and help out. They definitely see it when you help. It's great meeting new people and learning about their stories. Hearing their stories can help you better understand how you can make a difference in your community.

Q: Has there been anyone that you've interacted with in your community that has taught you something?

A: I would definitely say the staff here. Just watching them has been inspiring. I love working with them and seeing what they do for the community as well and it helps to give you a new perspective.
