Christmas Assistance Brings Hope to a Traverse City Family
When Adriona and her family moved from Washington State to Traverse City, they were starting over in a brand-new community. As a stay-at-home mom raising three young boys, Adriona was searching for food assistance and local resources while adjusting to life in northern Michigan. That's when she discovered The Salvation Army.
What began as a search for practical support became something much more. Through food assistance, Christmas programs and caring volunteers, The Salvation Army helped ensure Adriona's family experienced the joy of the holiday season during a time when she wasn't sure how she would make Christmas happen for her children. We spoke with Adriona to learn more about her family and how The Salvation Army supported them during the holiday season.
Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
A: My name is Adriona, and I'm a stay-at-home mom with three little boys. We moved to Traverse City from Washington State because of my husband's job.
Q: What brought you to The Salvation Army?
A: We had just moved to the area and needed help finding food and other resources. I was searching online for local food pantries and discovered The Salvation Army.
Q: What assistance did your family receive?
A: The food market, community lunches and monthly pantry helped our family tremendously. We also received personal hygiene items and other resources. As Christmas approached, The Salvation Army helped us connect with holiday assistance programs, food and gifts for the children.
Q: How did Christmas assistance impact your family?
A: We received a donated Christmas tree, decorations, holiday food and gifts for the boys. It was such an incredible blessing. I remember crying because of the kindness everyone showed our family.
Q: What would Christmas have looked like without that support?
A: We definitely would not have had an actual tree. We would have had some gifts, but not nearly as many. The support helped make Christmas feel special and gave my children memories they otherwise may not have had.
Q: How did your boys react on Christmas morning?
A: They were so excited. There were gifts, stockings and surprises for each of them. Seeing their happiness meant everything to me.
Q: What would you say to someone considering donating or volunteering?
A: It really helps. Before coming here, I wasn't sure how we were going to make Christmas special for our kids. When people donate toys, volunteer or give financially, they're helping families create memories and get through difficult seasons.
