For Jim and Helen Britton, volunteering with The Salvation Army in Niles isn’t just something they do—it’s part of who they are.

Helen has been attending church services at The Salvation Army for nearly five decades, while dedicating nearly 20 years to volunteering. What started as a simple introduction through family quickly became something much more meaningful. “Now, I love it,” she says.

Her first volunteer experience left a lasting impression. Helen and a small group of volunteers assembled backpacks filled with food that they delivered to schools so children could have meals over the weekend. “I just thought it was so awesome to be able to help,” she recalls.

That sense of purpose has kept her coming back year after year. Whether helping families during the holidays or supporting ongoing programs, Helen says volunteering “makes me feel wonderful.”

Jim’s journey began around the same time, starting as a bell ringer during the Christmas season. Inspired by Helen, he quickly became deeply involved. “I tell people I’m not retired anymore—I just quit working for money,” he says with a smile.

Over the past 20 years, Jim has become someone who will do whatever is needed. From maintaining the grounds to hauling supplies, assisting with Christmas toy shops, and volunteering for the Feeding His Sheep program, his impact is felt across the Niles community. “All they’ve got to do is call me,” he says. “I’ll come in and do it.”

One of Jim’s most memorable moments came while volunteering at a youth camp, where he helped teach kids how to fish. He remembers a teenage boy catching his very first fish—a small one, but a moment that meant everything. “He was so excited… hugging everybody,” Jim says. “It just changed my attitude right there.” It’s a reminder that even small experiences can create lasting joy.

Together, Jim and Helen embody what it means to serve with heart. Their advice to others is simple: just try it. “They ought to try it, and then they would love doing it,” Helen says. Jim agrees, “You’ll never get a better feeling out of life than helping somebody else.”

Their story is a powerful example of how giving your time can change not only the lives of others—but your own. Start your volunteer journey with The Salvation Army today. Search opportunities near you by visiting our volunteer page.
