Access to Justice in Metro Detroit: Inside the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic
For thousands of individuals across metro Detroit, navigating the legal system alone can feel overwhelming—especially during life’s most difficult moments. That’s where the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic steps in.
From the perspective of those who power the clinic’s work each day, the mission is clear: provide access to justice for those who need it most.
“We assist the underprivileged community of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties with all of the legal needs they may have,” says staff attorney Sydney Gebara. Without this support, many clients would be left to represent themselves in a complex system. “That can be a very daunting process,” she adds, noting that the clinic offers guidance and reassurance every step of the way.
That impact is felt deeply by clients—and by the team itself. Cara Koeske, another staff attorney, described the clinic’s role as filling a critical gap. “The justice system is not set up for self-represented litigants,” she explains. “Without legal aid, there’s truly no way to function.” For Cara, the ever-changing nature of the work—new cases, new people, new challenges—makes it both demanding and deeply rewarding.
Law school extern Emily Coleman sees firsthand how the clinic meets people where they are. “We’re helping them on the worst days of their lives navigate the legal system a little more smoothly,” she says. Whether drafting documents or offering advice, the goal is always to empower clients to move forward with confidence.
“Legal services can be very expensive,” says Lydia Kado, the clinic’s paralegal. “It can be a roadblock for people trying to move on with issues in their lives.” At the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic, that barrier is removed—replaced with compassion, expertise and a shared commitment to meaningful change.
One of the most important ways the community can support this life-changing work is through the clinic’s annual Walk for Justice, held at the Detroit Zoo. Drawing hundreds of supporters each year, the family-friendly event features activities, a silent auction and opportunities to connect—all while raising critical funds to sustain free legal services.
As Sydney puts it, “The more funding we can get, the more good we can do.”
