For nearly two decades, The Salvation Army’s annual Sporting Clay Shoot has brought together community members, business leaders and outdoor enthusiasts for a day of friendly competition—all in support of a much bigger mission: creating opportunities for underserved youth.

A Premier Charity Clay Shoot in Michigan

Now in its 19th year, this charity sporting event in Metro Detroit has grown into one of the most anticipated sporting clay shoots in Michigan, combining a first-class experience with meaningful impact.

Hosted at the Detroit Gun Club in Commerce Township, the event features a professionally designed course with approximately 14–17 stations and a full 100-clay round—delivering an authentic sporting clays experience for participants of all skill levels.

But what truly sets this event apart is its focus on quality. From a multi-course meal to a seamless, well-organized experience, every detail is designed to create a premium event that keeps participants coming back year after year.

Supporting Youth Through The Salvation Army Outdoors

Proceeds from the event directly benefit The Salvation Army Outdoors (TSAO), a program dedicated to mentoring and supporting underserved youth through outdoor experiences.

What started as a local initiative has grown into something much bigger.

“We began thinking we could help local kids in our community,” says Jeff Sangster, Salvation Army Metro Detroit and Harbor Light advisory board member and Clay Shoot event organizer. “Now, that program has stretched across the entire country. That impact extends to youth nationwide from the seed that was planted here.”

Through TSAO, young people gain confidence, life skills and opportunities that help them build a stronger future.

More Than Just Shooting, It’s a Full Event Experience

In addition to sporting clays, participants can enjoy:

  • A live auction featuring unique experiences like hunting trips, a helicopter ride, gourmet dining and more

  • Interactive elements like green clays, where special targets offer chances to win door prizes

  • Optional shooting activities, including trap and skeet, for an additional donation

  • Opportunities to connect with local business leaders and community supporters

Whether you’re entertaining clients or enjoying a day with friends, this event blends recreation with purpose.

Beginner-Friendly and Open to All

No experience? No problem.

“You don’t need to know how to shoot—just come out and have fun,” says Jeff. “Many people try it once and end up loving it.”

The Sporting Clay Shoot is designed to be welcoming for beginners while still offering a great experience for seasoned participants.
