Making an Impact Behind the Scenes: Celebrating Volunteers During National Volunteer Week

When people think about volunteering with The Salvation Army, they often picture ringing bells during Christmas or serving meals to those in need. Those are just a few ways to make a difference in your community. For Lisa Hartley, volunteering looks a little different—and it’s exactly where her talents shine.

After a life-changing health journey that included a thyroid cancer diagnosis in 2024, Lisa began to reflect on how she wanted to spend her time. Now cancer-free, she chose to retire early and give back to the community. With a background in administrative work, Lisa found her perfect fit through The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division Service Extension in Gladwin County.

Each Tuesday, Lisa volunteers in the Mission Resource Connection Center at Sacred Heart Mission, in partnership with The Salvation Army, where she assists clients with their Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP) applications. Her work is detailed—reviewing paperwork, scanning documents, and ensuring applications are complete—but it’s the human connection that matters most.

“Sometimes people just need someone to listen,” says Lisa. “That can take more time than the paperwork.”

Lisa has even experienced both sides of volunteering—helping clients during the week and ringing bells during the holidays. One moment that stayed with her? A client recognized her at the red kettle and shared her gratitude for helping her.

“It opens your eyes to the needs in your own community,” she says. “We’re all one mishap away from needing assistance.”

In Gladwin County, where many families are working hard but still struggling to make ends meet, Lisa’s presence is a lifeline. One day, she assisted nearly 20 clients—ensuring they have the support they need to stay on track.

But what she gains in return is just as powerful.

“It replenishes my soul,” Lisa says. “It gives me strength. This is the most peace I’ve had in my life.”

This National Volunteer Week, The Salvation Army invites you to consider how your time and talents—whether administrative, hands-on, or simply a listening ear—can make a difference.

Because no matter how you choose to serve, one thing is certain: when you give your time, you receive so much more in return. Learn more about all the different volunteer opportunities available across Michigan here.
