Maggie’s Story
When Maggie made the difficult decision to leave a negative relationship, she found herself trying to begin again while caring for her three young children.
She needed to sell her home and find a new place for her family to live. But before she could move forward, there were immediate needs she could not ignore. Past-due water and sewer bills had accumulated, and she needed to keep the utilities on while she and her children were still living in the house.
She was doing everything she could, but there was simply too much to carry at once.
That was when The Salvation Army came alongside her.
Help with her utility bills allowed Maggie to keep the household running while she focused on selling the home and finding a new place for her family. Along the way, The Salvation Army also helped with food, diapers, wipes, community resources, and Back-to-School needs.
For Maggie, some of the most meaningful moments were surprisingly small.
Her children were able to choose their own backpacks. They could pick out snacks for school. During a season when so much of their lives felt uncertain, those simple choices helped them feel like other children preparing for another school year.
Asking for help was not easy for Maggie. But what stayed with her was not only the assistance her family received. It was the way they were treated.
People listened. They cared. They understood. There were smiles and simple words of kindness, even a sincere “Have a wonderful day.”
Maggie remembers what that meant during a time when there had been far more tears than smiles.
“You brought smiles to our faces when there were constant tears and hope in our lives when I didn’t know how we were going to get through this situation.”
Today, Maggie describes her family as a success story.
Perhaps one of the greatest gifts from that difficult chapter is what her children were able to see for themselves: asking for help does not mean giving up. Sometimes it means discovering that there are people willing to stand beside you until you can move forward again.
