Why Volunteer Year Round With The Salvation Army?

Most people think of volunteering with The Salvation Army as ringing the bell during the Red Kettle Campaign at Christmas. And while that tradition remains one of the most visible and beloved ways volunteers support our work, it is only one part of a much larger story.

In reality, The Salvation Army relies on volunteers every day of the year, in communities across the country, to help meet critical needs and strengthen lives. From responding to disasters to supporting families, seniors, and children, volunteers make it possible for us to serve wherever help is needed most.

Service That Goes Beyond the Holidays

The needs facing communities do not disappear when the holiday season ends. Hunger, housing instability, loneliness, and recovery challenges exist year round, and so do opportunities to help.

Volunteering with The Salvation Army is not about a single moment of service. It is about showing up consistently, whether that is once, occasionally, or on a regular basis. Volunteers choose how and when they serve, based on their schedules, interests, and skills.

A Wide Variety of Ways to Volunteer

Because The Salvation Army serves in nearly every ZIP code in America, volunteer opportunities are diverse and flexible. Depending on location, volunteers may support:

  • Hunger Services
Preparing or serving meals, organizing food pantries, or assisting with grocery distribution for individuals and families facing food insecurity.

  • Homelessness and Housing Support
Assisting at shelters and housing programs by helping with hospitality, organization, and support for neighbors working toward stability.

  • Emergency Disaster Services
Supporting trained teams before, during, and after disasters by helping distribute meals, supplies, and emotional care to survivors and first responders.

  • Family and Youth Programs
Helping with after school activities, summer camps, and community programs that provide safe, supportive environments for children and families.

  • Senior Services
Supporting meal programs, social activities, and outreach that help older adults stay connected and engaged.

  • Behind the Scenes Support
Sorting donations, organizing supplies, assisting with administrative tasks, or supporting special events and community outreach.

Some roles are hands on. Others happen quietly behind the scenes. Every role matters.

More Than Volunteering. It Is Connection.

Volunteering with The Salvation Army is about more than completing a task. It is about building relationships with neighbors, with communities, and often with people whose lives are very different from your own.

Many volunteers say they gain as much as they give. A sense of purpose, belonging, and connection. Over time, those individual acts of service add up to stronger communities and lasting impact.

Start Anytime. Serve Year Round.

Whether your first experience is ringing a bell or serving a meal, volunteering does not have to end there. Opportunities are available throughout the year, and every hour given helps ensure that no one faces hardship alone.
