There’s a Place for Everyone: Celebrating Volunteers During National Volunteer Week

For Debbie Holman, volunteering with The Salvation Army isn’t just something she does It’s part of who she is. A soldier at The Salvation Army Royal Oak Citadel since 1999, Debbie has spent decades saying “yes” to opportunities to servefrom teaching Sunday school to supporting youth character building programs to helping at community events.

“I jump at every opportunity to volunteer,” she says. For Debbie, the reward is simple. “You meet wonderful friends...it keeps me happy, it keeps me healthy.”

During National Volunteer Week, stories like Debbie’s remind us that volunteering is as much about connection as it is about service. Whether it’s lending a hand at a fundraiser, assisting with youth programs or greeting seniors at a community gathering, volunteers create a sense of belonging that extends far beyond any single task.

Debbie’s favourite event – the annual Royal Oak pastie sale, which supports The Salvation Army’s World Services perfectly captures that spiritVolunteers come together to prepare, assemble and sell thousands of homemade pasties in the fall. It’s not just about raising funds; it’s about bringing people together. “There is a job for everybody,” she shares, noting that volunteers of all abilities find meaningful ways to contribute, from chopping ingredients to rolling dough.

That’s the beauty of volunteering with The Salvation Army – there is truly a role for everyone. You can support programs for children and families, assist with seasonal initiatives like bell ringing, or even help with administrative tasks.

If you’ve ever wondered whether volunteering is right for you, Debbie has a simple message. “Come...there’s something for you to do.”
