The Salvation Army of Lawton recently celebrated a milestone as 14 individuals crossed the stage to receive certificates and mark a turning point in their lives through the Getting Ahead program, based on the book Bridges Out of Poverty.

For 17 weeks, participants gathered once a week to do more than attend a class; they engaged in honest reflection, meaningful discussion, and a new way of understanding the challenges they faced. The course encouraged participants to examine their circumstances through a fresh lens and to take intentional steps toward lasting change.

Leading the journey was Debra Johnson, whose story mirrors the hope the program represents. A 2017 Getting Ahead graduate and former Salvation Army employee, Johnson now leads the program with deep passion and lived experience. Since her graduation, she has earned her doctorate and currently oversees several local programs that support individuals and families in need. Her leadership serves as a reminder that transformation is possible and often begins with one courageous decision.

The graduation ceremony was further enriched by guest speaker Lawton City Councilman Allan Hampton. Hampton shared his personal background and encouraged graduates to keep pressing forward, reminding them that the knowledge and tools they have gained can help shape a brighter future.

One of the most moving moments of the ceremony came from graduate Marsha Phillips, who shared her testimony with honesty and hope. Marsha grew up in poverty in an alcoholic home, with no exposure to church. By age 19, she was addicted to meth and resigned to a life of poverty. Today, her story looks very different.

Now a born-again Christian, Marsha reflected on Proverbs 13:18 (NIV): “Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.” She shared how the program helped her understand the value of constructive criticism and the humility required for true personal growth. Through Getting Ahead, she gained both practical resources and renewed hope for the future.

“The sky is the limit,” Marsha said confidently, adding, “My story is still being written.”

The Salvation Army of Lawton looks forward to continuing this work, with the next Getting Ahead course scheduled to begin in January 2026 - offering more individuals the opportunity to rewrite their stories and move forward with purpose and hope.
