The Salvation Army of Goshen Sees Dramatic Increase in Community Need While Helping Fill Critical Service Gap

The Salvation Army of Goshen, serving Southern Elkhart County, has experienced a significant increase in the number of individuals and families seeking assistance. During the past month alone, the organization has served over twice its normal number of clients, reflecting the growing need for food assistance and emergency support throughout the community.

Over the last month, during The Window’s temporary stabilization period, The Salvation Army of Goshen, alongside First Light Mission, has stepped in to help fill the gap in essential services. Together, the organizations have worked to ensure that individuals and families throughout Southern Elkhart County have continued access to pantry assistance, hot meals, and other basic necessities during this time of transition.

“Our mission is to meet human needs in Christ’s name without discrimination,” said Lieutenant Aurelia Welch, Corps Officer of The Salvation Army of Goshen. “When there was a greater need in our community, we were committed to making sure no one was left without help. We are grateful to work alongside First Light Mission and our many community partners to ensure our neighbors continue to receive the care and support they need.”

The increased demand reflects the financial challenges many local households continue to face. Families, seniors, and individuals have turned to The Salvation Army for pantry assistance, emergency support, and connections to additional community resources.

As this collaborative effort continues, First Light Mission will be distributing free hot meals to the community on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Chamberlain Elementary School. Community members in need of a meal are encouraged to attend.
 

While The Salvation Army remains committed to serving every person who comes through its doors, the surge in demand has placed added pressure on food supplies, funding, and volunteer resources. Community support through donations, financial gifts, and volunteer service is more important than ever.
 

“We are incredibly thankful for the generosity of our community,” Welch added. “Because of the support of our donors, volunteers, churches, businesses, and community partners, we have been able to respond to this increased need. Together, we are ensuring that our neighbors continue to have access to essential food, hot meals, and hope during this important time.”
