WALTHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — As the school year fast approaches, The Salvation Army in Waltham hosted its annual "Tools for School: Backpack and School Supply Giveaway" on Monday, Aug. 10.
Around 800 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed by local volunteers to children in need from Waltham, Watertown, and Newton.
Captain Justin Barter with the Salvation Army of Waltham said people "have a deep need in this community."
"When there's something that can be given that will help alleviate just a little bit of the need as we come into our back-to-school time," he said.
Barter said families have to spend about $850 per child to send them back to the classroom.
Students received all sorts of supplies in their new backpacks, such as pens, pencils, notebooks, colored markers, and binders.
“I feel like this can help out a lot of families to not spend a lot of money,” student Michelle said.
Staff from The Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope Program were also there to share resources for overcoming poverty with those most in need.
Snacks and lunch were provided by The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services canteen, and Pizzi Farm’s Ice Cream Truck provided ice cream.
Beyond Monday's event, the non-profit will also be distributing thousands more backpacks at TD Garden on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
