Stepping in and Stepping up

Aaron and his wife Julie were getting by on their single income as empty-nesters. Aaron worked full-time while Julie stayed at home. Health issues made it difficult for her to work, but she did not receive disability benefits.

One day, unexpectedly, their daughter showed up on their doorstep with her four kids, ages 15,12,10, and 3. She had just escaped a domestic violence situation and had nowhere else to go. Aaron and Julie would never turn their daughter and grandchildren away, so they warmly welcomed them into their home.

In the coming month the summer heatwave hit, causing the family to use more energy to keep their home cool and safe for the children. When the next utility bill came, Aaron was shocked and worried, as it was several hundred dollars more than usual. The added costs of bringing five more individuals into their household meant Aaron’s steady paycheck didn’t go as far. Unable to pay his utility bill and care for his family, Aaron turned to The Salvation Army of Perry County.

Jo Ann, the Perry County Service Extension representative, was available and ready to help when Aaron needed itThanks to generous donations to the Red Kettle Campaign the previous fall, Jo Ann had enough money to help Aaron cover his bill. Because of the help provided, Aaron and his family were able to make it through the heatwave, and he and Julie could continue to provide a safe and loving environment for their entire family.

The Salvation Army stepped in to support Aaron because people like you stepped up to support our ministries. Thank you!
