September is National Recovery Month

Share Story

Started in 1989 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Recovery Month is an opportunity each September to honor both professionals who support those in need of substance abuse intervention and those individuals in recovery.

Recovery is transforming lives in every community across America. Through the Great American Recovery, SAMHSA is working alongside states, tribes, territories, local governments, faith organizations, employers, families, recovery community organizations, treatment providers, and people with lived experience to strengthen the systems that make recovery possible for everyone.

National Recovery Month is an opportunity to celebrate that progress, recognize those who make recovery possible, and invite every American to be part of building recovery-ready communities.

At The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers, we believe that faith is the backbone of a successful recovery, and 2 Corinthians 5:17 serves as a reminder that new life is possible: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Often, the hardest step in recovery is the first one. But, as Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

Today and throughout the month, we celebrate those who are taking the step toward their recovery, and those dedicated members of our team who are walking with them.

We also celebrate you – those who donate clothing, furniture and household items, and those who shop at our Thrift Stores. Without you, our Adult Rehabilitation Center programs would not be possible.

How You Can Help During National Recovery Month
This month, we encourage you to help us build recovery ready communities. Here are a few ways you can help.

  • Be a Voice for Recovery - Celebrating recovery out loud is a powerful way to reduce stigma. This Recovery Month, let's honor milestones reached, relationships rebuilt, and lives transformed.
  • Share resources – There are national hotlines and websites to help those in need, such as www.findsupport.gov. You can also share information about our Adult Rehabilitation Center programs with someone in need of support.
  • Shop at our Thrift Stores or donate. You can find your nearest location by visiting www.satruck.org.
