Senior Center Keeps Seniors Active and Connected to the Things They Love
At The Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem, the Senior Center is much more than a place for activities and meals—it is a place where older adults find connection, purpose, friendship, and support. Every day, the Center helps address some of the most significant challenges facing seniors in our community, including social isolation, food insecurity, transportation barriers, and declining health.
Social isolation remains one of the greatest challenges for older adults. Many seniors live alone, have limited transportation, or have experienced the loss of loved ones. The Senior Center creates opportunities for participants to build friendships, stay active, learn new skills, and enjoy a genuine sense of belonging. As the program team explains, “We don’t just provide services; we create community, we create a family.”
Through a wide variety of physical, recreational, and educational activities, seniors are empowered to remain engaged with the people and interests they love. These programs support physical health, cognitive wellness, emotional well-being, and independence while encouraging meaningful social connections.
Nutrition is another critical need among older adults. For many participants, financial, physical, or transportation challenges make it difficult to access healthy meals. The Senior Center provides nutritious, well-balanced meals that not only address these needs but also bring people together around the table. These shared meals foster friendships, reduce isolation, and contribute to a better quality of life.
Transportation can often be the difference between participation and isolation. Thanks to support from the United Way, many seniors can access the Center through WSTA Trans-Aid transportation assistance. This service ensures participants can travel safely to and from the Center, removing a major barrier and allowing them to remain active and connected.
The Center also helps seniors navigate health challenges by partnering with community organizations and healthcare providers. During the current program year, more than 13 agencies and organizations have provided health education, wellness resources, and information about community services, equipping seniors with the tools they need to make informed decisions and maintain their quality of life.
The impact of the Senior Center is best seen through the lives it changes.
After moving to Winston-Salem following a difficult divorce, Valerie struggled with emotional pain and a loss of purpose. An invitation from a Senior Center member changed everything. Since joining the program, Valerie has become one of its most dedicated volunteers. She credits the Center with helping her find a new beginning, restore her confidence, and rediscover happiness and meaningful relationships.
Mr. Carl's story is equally inspiring. After surviving a violent robbery and relocating to Winston-Salem, he sought a place where he could reconnect with others and regain a sense of purpose. Since joining the program, he has become an enthusiastic participant in nearly every activity offered. When asked what the Senior Center means to him, he shares, “This program changed my life and gave me a new opportunity to enjoy life again
These stories represent countless lives touched by the Senior Center each year. Through compassion, connection, and practical support, the program helps seniors thrive, remain independent, and continue contributing to the community they call home.
