The Salvation Army Freeport Community Center recently partnered with nursing students from Molloy University's Barbara H. Hagan School of Nursing to host a Renaissance Fair, bringing local seniors together for an afternoon of fun, activities, and community connection.

The event featured chair aerobics, crafts, Renaissance-themed decorations and costumes, games, and even jousting with pool noodles. Nursing students also spent time with participants, checking their blood pressure and helping them better understand their readings and overall health.

Beyond the fun of the event, the afternoon offered a glimpse into the important role The Salvation Army's Freeport Senior Program plays in supporting older adults in the Long Island community.

As the cost of living continues to rise, many older adults face increasing financial pressure, forcing difficult choices between basic necessities and social activities. Because the Freeport Senior Program is offered at no cost to its members, it provides an accessible place for seniors to stay active, socialize, and build community without adding another financial burden.

This is particularly important for older adults, who are at increased risk of social isolation and loneliness. For many seniors, having a consistent place to gather, participate in activities, and build relationships can be an important source of connection and community.

According to Senior Program Director Awilde Rosario, special events like the Renaissance Fair are an important addition to the center's five-day-a-week programming. Members regularly share how much they look forward to these events throughout the month, which provide not only an afternoon of fun but also opportunities to connect with others and enjoy new experiences.

Through its Freeport Senior Program, The Salvation Army continues to provide older adults with a welcoming, supportive environment where they can stay engaged and connected without the added financial burden.

To help support programs serving older adults and other neighbors in need, consider volunteering with The Salvation Army or making a donation.
