Red Shield Youth Centers Summer Day Camp
By Paul Conklin /

Each summer, families across the country look for safe, meaningful, and enriching opportunities for their children, and that’s exactly where The Salvation Army Red Shield Youth Centers step in. With more than 55 centers serving over 8,000 young people in the Southern Territory, Red Shield Youth Centers provide a place where youth are not only cared for, but truly known, supported, and developed.
At its core, a Red Shield Youth Center is a ministry-driven, community-based space designed to nurture the whole child. Rooted in The Salvation Army’s principles, the centers go beyond traditional youth programming by intentionally creating opportunities for young people to experience faith in action. Through caring relationships, mentorship, and consistent encouragement, youth are reminded that they are seen, valued, and deeply loved by God. It is a place where belonging is not earned — it is given.
Summer Day Camp is one of the most meaningful ways to live out that mission. It provides a structured, full-day program in which youth participate in activities such as sports, creative arts, field trips, and academic enrichment. Additionally, it incorporates moments of faith formation through short devotional times, prayer, VBS, Bible-based lessons, or simple conversations that inspire hope and purpose. Youth are encouraged to explore and deepen their spiritual journey in a setting where fun and faith come together in meaningful, age-appropriate ways.
What sets Red Shield Youth Centers apart is how intentionally we measure growth and resilience in the youth we serve. Our approach is built around four key outcome domains that reflect “whole youth development,” including spiritual formation as a vital component:
- Safety & Spiritual Wellbeing: We prioritize physical and emotional safety while creating space for youth to encounter faith, engage in spiritual conversations, and grow in their understanding of God’s love.
- Character & Social-Emotional Development: Youth build leadership, resilience, and empathy grounded in values like compassion, integrity, and respect for others.
- Education & Healthy Lifestyles: We support academic growth and encourage stewardship of one’s body through healthy habits and positive choices.
- Engagement & Fun: Joy matters. Youth connect through meaningful activities, building relationships that reflect encouragement and Christ-like care.
Through these domains, we don’t just hope youth are growing — we actively walk alongside them in that growth. We see lives being shaped not only by new skills and experiences, but by a deeper understanding of hope, identity, and purpose rooted in faith.
Summer Day Camp at Red Shield Youth Centers is more than childcare — it is ministry in motion. It’s where laughter fills the halls, friendships are formed, and seeds of faith are planted and nurtured. Each day is an opportunity to pour into the next generation, reminding them they are never alone and that their lives have meaning.
As each piece of their development comes together, we see what we believe to be true: when all the pieces connect, young people don’t just grow — they thrive.
