This month's recommendation is Seven Core Issues in Adoption and Permanency by Sharon Kaplan Roszia and Allison Davis Maxon. This framework for understanding adoption and permanency offers a unifying lens that is inclusive of all parties of the adoption triad - adoptee, birth family, and adoptive family - as well as the varied types of permanency our youth experience, including foster care and kinship care. Attachment and trauma research is integrated in each of the seven core issues: loss, rejection, shame/guilt, grief, identity, intimacy, and mastery/control to provide a fuller understanding of our children's needs. Each core issue is presented in full, including its impact on individuals and practical tips for growth and healing.
