Major Helen Braun was Promoted to Glory on June 7, 2026, from her home in Hagerstown, MD. She was 86.

Helen Evangeline Smith was born on July 9, 1939, in Havre de Grace, MD, the eldest daughter of Clifford and Helen Smith. Throughout her life, she was known for her unwavering faith, servant’s heart, gentle spirit, and deep love for her family.

Helen married the love of her life, Carroll Braun, with whom she shared a life of service to others for 65 years. They entered God’s call to ministry through The Salvation Army, arriving at the Evangeline Booth College in 1977 as members of the Joyful Evangelists session of cadets. Commissioned in June 1979, they faithfully served congregations and communities throughout the United States and Mexico, including appointments in Fairmont, WV; Big Spring, TX; Texarkana, TX; Mexico City, Mexico; Baton Rouge, LA; Louisville, KY; Memphis, TN; and Anniston, AL.

After retirement, Majors Helen and Carroll returned to Hagerstown where they continued to worship and volunteer at the corps. Even in retirement, their dedication to ministry remained strong, answering requests to return to active service in Huntington, WV; Martinsburg, WV; and Baltimore, MD.

Whether ministering from a pulpit, opening her home to others, offering a listening ear, or quietly helping someone in need, Major Helen reflected Christ’s love through her humble service. She touched countless lives through her kindness, compassion, wisdom, and steadfast faith.

Major Helen Braun is preceded in death by her husband, Major Carroll Braun, Sr.; one son, Daniel Braun; and one grandson, Joseph Boyd.

She is survived by her sister, Major Patricia Witmer; her brother, Robert Smith; a daughter, Valerie (Andreas) Soemadi; three sons: Carroll (Heather) Braun, Jr., Sean Braun, and James (Debbie) Boyd. She also leaves ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Hagerstown Corps on June 15, 2026, with Major Robert Lyle officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery with Major Jimmy Taylor officiating.
