The Salvation Army Poughkeepsie Community Center recently opened a new community garden, giving local neighbors a place to connect with nature, grow their own food, learn new skills, and build community.
The garden features 15 raised beds where select community members can plant, tend, and harvest their own fruits and vegetables with support from Salvation Army staff.
Beyond growing fresh produce, the garden provides local residents with an opportunity to spend time outdoors and participate in an experience they otherwise may not have access to. Community gardens can foster connection, encourage healthy eating, and create opportunities for people of different generations to learn from one another, giving neighbors a shared space to gather, learn, and grow.
For one local Poughkeepsie father, the garden has become a meaningful way to share his knowledge with his children. Through planting and caring for their garden together, he has been able to introduce them to the process of growing their own food, providing hands-on learning opportunities and a deeper connection to nature.
Looking ahead, The Salvation Army hopes to expand the garden's impact by donating some of the fruits and vegetables grown to the food pantry operated by the Poughkeepsie Community Center. This would allow the garden to not only benefit participating community members but also provide fresh produce to local neighbors experiencing food insecurity.
To help support programs like the community garden and other services benefiting neighbors in need, consider volunteering with The Salvation Army or making a donation. Your support can help make a meaningful difference in communities across Greater New York!
