From Grief to Stability: Dina’s Story
From Grief to Stability: Dina’s Story
When Dina walked through the doors of Grace Place Shelter, she was carrying more than a backpack of belongings. She was carrying the crushing grief of losing her husband, the fear of starting over at age 58, and the weight of losing nearly everything after his death. She had recently experienced an eviction and could not imagine who would hire her or how she would ever find another place to live.
Dina remembers arriving at the shelter feeling completely broken. Questions raced through her mind: How will I keep going without my husband? Who will hire someone my age? How will I ever get an apartment with a fresh eviction on my record?
Soon after arriving, she met with Gretchen and Jennifer, members of the Grace Place team who helped her begin putting a plan in place. Dina recalls that even this first meeting felt like an answered prayer. For the first time in months, she felt a small glimpse of hope. Someone was listening to her story and helping her see a path forward.
Over the next several months, Gretchen worked closely with Dina as she focused intensely on finding employment and rebuilding her life. Dina filled out numerous job applications and was hired surprisingly quickly. She went to work every day, began saving money, and slowly started to regain her confidence. With each step forward, Grace Place remained beside her, providing encouragement and accountability.
Finding housing proved more difficult. Dina applied for many apartments but was repeatedly turned away because of her eviction history. Instead of giving up, she began calling landlords directly to explain her situation. She wanted them to see the person behind the eviction, the widow who had lost her husband and her financial stability almost overnight. One landlord listened, gave her a chance, and was willing to work with her.
Dina credits much of her success to the network of support available through Grace Place. In addition to shelter, she connected with workforce coaches, feeding programs, and other community partnerships coordinated by the shelter. These resources helped stabilize her while she rebuilt her income and searched for permanent housing.
Today, Dina has lived in stable housing for nearly two years. She is employed full-time and has been promoted to a team leader position. The woman who arrived at Grace Place feeling hopeless now speaks with confidence about the future.
Dina wants others to know that recovery is possible. She often says, “If you work the program, it will work for you.” She firmly believes that Grace Place saved her when she was at her lowest point. Her journey was not a quick fix; it required determination, hard work, and perseverance. But the support she received from the shelter provided the foundation for her remarkable comeback.
Dina’s story demonstrates the life-changing impact of comprehensive shelter services. Grace Place did more than provide a bed for the night—it offered compassionate guidance, practical resources, and a supportive community that helped a grieving widow rebuild her life from the ground up.
