Fort Wayne Celebrates National Salvation Army Week

The Salvation Army of Fort Wayne proudly joins communities across the nation in celebrating National Salvation Army Week, honoring more than 160 years of service worldwide and 140 years of local impact in Allen County.

Founded in London in 1865 by William and Catherine Booth, The Salvation Army began as a mission to bring the gospel and practical assistance to those most in need. The Salvation Army established its presence in Fort Wayne. Since then, the Army has been a cornerstone of compassion and support, adapting to meet the changing needs of families and individuals in crisis.

Throughout its history, The Salvation Army has combined faith with action. From the “Donut Lassies” who supported American troops during World War I to disaster relief teams responding to hurricanes and floods, the Army has consistently stood on the front lines of service. Locally, the Fort Wayne corps has expanded from its early ministry to include a wide range of programs such as  a client choice food pantry and food bank, transportation assistance through bus passes, rent and utility support, clothing distribution, backpacks with school supplies, seasonal Christmas aid, recovery messenger programs, and more.

Last year alone, The Salvation Army of Fort Wayne served 33,174 individuals, the highest number in its history. Partnerships with businesses and organizations along with the tremendous support from volunteers (l7,553 hours last year) allow the Army to stretch every dollar further, stabilizing households and ensuring families remain safely housed, connected to utilities, and able to meet daily needs.
