At The Salvation Army, community partnerships are at the heart of everything we do, and we are deeply grateful for those who help advance our mission. Few shine as brightly as our ongoing collaboration with Fletcher Academy.

Most recently, an entire sixth-grade class rolled up their sleeves to help beautify the grounds of our community center.

“They had a task, they felt purpose, and they were productive,” said Tiffany Gregory, Lower School Director.  “They took pride in knowing they did something good.”

Supporting Us Through Every Season

Fletcher Academy students demonstrate a boundless willingness to serve.

They have assembled “move-out kits” for shelter residents transitioning into new homes—providing essential supplies that help families begin their next chapter with dignity and confidence. During the colder months, students have volunteered at our warehouse to sort donations for our annual Coats for the Children campaign, ensuring local children stay warm. And during the holiday season, they have lent their time and energy at our Angel Tree warehouse, helping organize and distribute gifts to children in need across Wake County.

Through a strong partnership with volunteer coordinator Rosemary Weber, Fletcher Academy students continue to show up in meaningful ways to support our programs and the neighbors we serve.

“Fletcher has been an incredible partner to us,” said Weber. “Their students show up ready to work, ready to learn, and ready to make a difference. It means so much not just to our team, but to the individuals and families we serve every day.”

Service as a Core Value at Fletcher Academy
At Fletcher Academy, community service isn’t just an activity—it is part of a core school value: to “soar as a community leader.”

“It is near and dear to my heart that students understand community needs,” said Gregory. “Part of our responsibility as a school, and as families and organizations, is to educate and expose children to people with different life experiences.”

Building Empathy Through Real-World Experiences
Gregory emphasizes that these hands-on experiences help students build empathy and perspective. For many, volunteering provides a first glimpse into the realities some of their neighbors face whether it’s food insecurity, housing instability, or lack of resources.

“We want them to understand that nonprofits depend on donations and volunteers, and that their efforts truly make a difference,” she said. “You can never start too soon when it comes to raising compassionate, community-minded individuals.”

Inspiring the Next Generation of Community Leaders
Fletcher Academy reinforces its commitment to service through initiatives like its “Garnet and Gray” team competition, where students participate in multiple service projects throughout the year. From donation drives to volunteer days with local organizations, students not only contribute to important causes but also learn the value of teamwork, generosity, and leadership.

Creating Purpose Through Volunteerism
That sense of pride and purpose is exactly what The Salvation Army strives to cultivate through every volunteer opportunity.

“Volunteers like the students at Fletcher Academy remind us why this work matters,” Weber said. “They bring energy, compassion, and a genuine desire to help others and their efforts make a tangible impact.”

We are deeply grateful for Fletcher Academy’s continued commitment to serving our neighbors and strengthening our community.
