Faithfully Serving the Children of Winston-Salem for 46 Years...and Counting
For more than four decades, DeeDee McIntyre-Caldwell has faithfully served The Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem—quietly shaping lives, strengthening families, and embodying the heart of Christ through her work.
What began as a part-time job nearly 46 years ago quickly became something much deeper.
“I thought I would only stay a couple of years while I was in school,” Ms. DeeDee recalls. “But it became a ministry.”
A Life Rooted in Ministry
From her earliest days working under Salvation Army leadership, Ms. DeeDee developed skills in administration, record keeping, and communications—but what kept her here was not just the work. It was the mission.
“The Salvation Army believes in doing for others,” she shares. “And I’ve always loved giving back and taking care of people.”
Over the years, Ms. DeeDee has served in multiple roles and had an impact on innumerable children. At every step, she has seen her work not as a job, but as a calling from God.
“Even when I had opportunities to leave, I just couldn’t,” she says. “This has been a ministry to me.”
A Family That Spans Generations
Today, Ms. DeeDee’s impact can be seen in the generations of families who have come through the Red Shield Youth Center. Children she once knew from the Center now return as parents and pass along the treasured experience of being guided by Ms. DeeDee.
“I feel like a grandma to a lot of the kids,” she says with a smile. “It’s a blessing to see them come back.”
Her own family has been part of that story as well. Her daughter, along with nieces and nephews, grew up in the programs DeeDee helped support—giving her the unique joy of serving both her own family and the broader community at the same time.
A Safe Place for Every Child
For Ms. DeeDee, the importance of the Ken Carlson Red Shield Youth Center is clear: it is a safe, loving place where children can grow and families can find peace of mind.
“Parents want to know their children are safe—that someone will protect them and care for them,” she explains. “And that’s what we do.”
Beyond safety, it’s the love of Christ lived out daily that sets this ministry apart.
“They know their kids will be off the streets, learning, growing—but also that someone is going to love and care for them,” she says.
A “Hidden Gem” in Winston-Salem
Despite its long history and deep impact on the Greater Winston-Salem area, Ms. DeeDee believes many in the community still don’t fully realize what opportunities are available within the walls of the Red Shield Youth Center.
“I think we’re a hidden gem,” she says. “People are amazed when they come and see everything we do.”
From after-school care and mentorship to enrichment programs and spiritual encouragement, the center continues to change lives every day—thanks in large part to dedicated staff like Ms. DeeDee and the faithful support of donors and volunteers.
A Legacy of Faithfulness
As Ms. DeeDee reflects on her journey, she sees God’s hand guiding every step along the way.
“I feel like this is where God wants me to finish my Salvation Army journey,” she says.
Though she isn’t slowing down anytime soon, her legacy is already clear: a life poured out in service, a heart committed to others, and a ministry that has touched countless lives.
