City of Quincy Proclaims May 11-17, 2026, as National Salvation Army Week
Quincy, IL – In an effort to bring citizens of Quincy together to address issues affecting their most vulnerable neighbors year-round, Mayor Dr. Linda K. Moore has issued a proclamation declaring May 11-17, 2026, as “National Salvation Army Week.” The proclamation recognizes the ongoing efforts of the staff and volunteers of the country’s largest nongovernmental provider of social services to help those in the community who are struggling.
Many people think of The Salvation Army’s bell ringers and Red Kettles during the holiday season, but few are fully aware of the organization’s year‑round work to serve individuals and families experiencing homelessness or the effects of poverty. Over the past year in Quincy, The Salvation Army provided more than 38,345 meals, assisted 8,098 individuals through basic social services, and supplied over 7,670 safe nights of shelter and housing support, delivering help and hope in Quincy every day of the year.
The Salvation Army Quincy Area Command serves residents across Adams, Pike, and Brown counties in Illinois, and Marion, Ralls, Lewis, Monroe, and Shelby counties in Missouri, through programs including the Family Stores, Emergency Shelter, Emergency Disaster Services, rent and utility assistance, Pathway of Hope, Food Pantry, Canteen Ministry, and Breakfast Church at the Kroc Center.
In recognition of National Salvation Army Week, the Bayview Bridge will be lit red throughout the week, symbolizing The Salvation Army’s commitment to serving those in need and its ongoing presence in the Quincy area.

In 1954, the United States Congress and then‑President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed the first National Salvation Army Week as a reminder to Americans to give freely of themselves and to recognize The Salvation Army’s long‑standing dedication to serving others in times of war and peace.
