Finding Purpose Through Service: Celebrating Volunteers During National Volunteer Week

For Carol Kwaikowski, volunteering with The Salvation Army is more than just giving back—it’s a source of purpose, connection, and joy. At 80 years old, Carol spends her time at The Salvation Army Royal Oak Citadel helping in the kitchen, supporting events, and even greeting others before Sunday church service. Whether she’s preparing meals or cleaning up after gatherings, she finds fulfillment in knowing her efforts make a difference.

“It gives you a good feeling inside,” Carol shares. “You know you’re helping someone in need.”

During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate individuals like Carol who dedicate their time and talents to serving others. Volunteers are the heartbeat of The Salvation Army, helping us meet critical needs across our communities every day.

There are countless ways to get involved—whether you enjoy hands-on service or behind-the-scenes support. Volunteers can assist with meal preparation, organize donations, support youth programs, ring bells during the holidays, help at special events, or provide administrative support. No matter your skillset or availability, there’s a place for you.

Carol’s journey is a reminder that volunteering isn’t just about what you give—it’s about what you gain. From building meaningful relationships to strengthening your sense of purpose, the impact goes both ways.

If you’ve been looking for a way to make a difference, now is the perfect time to start. Join us in serving others and strengthening our communities.
