A Story of Stability: Supporting a Veteran Family's Journey to a Fresh Start

At The Salvation Army, we believe in providing hope and support for those who have served our country. Recently, we had the privilege of assisting a Veteran family—two parents and their two children—on their journey to stability and independence. Their story highlights the power of community and the transformative impact of our programs.

The family initially transitioned from our Family Housing Center (FHC) to the Grant and Per Diem (GPD) transitional housing program. This move provided them with a stable living situation, ensuring their two children could start school in Colorado Springs without disruption. Stability became the foundation for this family’s fresh start.

In addition to providing housing, the GPD program focused on stabilizing the family’s financial situation. The children found community and support by enrolling in the Red Shield program, where they experienced meaningful connections and benefited from the resources available to them.

Meanwhile, the GPD staff worked closely with the parents to empower them with the tools they needed to succeed. They assisted the Veteran in increasing his VA disability rating, which helped to improve the family’s financial outlook. At the same time, the wife began a new job skills program, paving the way for steady employment and long-term self-sufficiency.

These combined efforts recently led to a major milestone for the family: tentative approval for a housing voucher, which will allow them to secure permanent, stable housing. This achievement marks an exciting new chapter for this resilient family, who are now on the path to independence and stability.

Their story is a testament to the incredible things that can happen when dedicated staff, comprehensive programs, and a supportive community come together to uplift those in need. It is also a reminder of the importance of supporting our veterans and their families as they rebuild their lives.
